Sewing with Valencia by Laura Gunn

Oh boy.  I haven't blogged in ages! I have been sewing a lot but mostly posting over on our favorite instafun, insta-addicting, instafeedback Instagram as @amylouwhosews!

I was able to sew with Laura Gunn's new fabric line Valencia a few months ago and it's now in stores available for purchase.  My favorite project I finished was this adorable Laura Ashley pattern by McCalls (6875).  The Michael Miller blog just posted all of the preview projects today including this dress! Go check it out!

I have the matching print in orange and pink to make for little sister.  Photos coming soon!

dress up days for a 3 year old

Someone turns three today.  And it's kind of killing me!  Her birthday always make me feel so nostalgic for some reason.  Partly because her birth coincided with our last move and by her turning 3 it signals that it's time for us to pick up and leave again.  Ugh.  Leaving is always the hardest part - yes, I am excited for our new home and another adventure.  But it breaks my heart every time I have to say good bye to friends and a place I've come to love.  But more on that later...

Look who's three!!

I don't know what it is about her, but she breaks the tension, makes me laugh and smile and soothes my frazzled self when I need it. I don't know if that comes with being #3 or being doted on as the baby or what. But she's been a bright spot in the past year full of deployment stress and all of that fun stuff.

Shari from Doohikey Designs for Riley Blake sent me some of her darling Dress Up Days fabric to make babylouwho a dress. I love this pattern so much (Simplicity 5695) that this is the 3rd dress I've made with it!  It comes together so easily and is so comfortable to wear!  And easy to adapt to whatever fabric you might have on hand!

I just love the bicycles and the flowers and the chevrons and the tiles!  It was the perfect fit for this pattern.

I left the elastic out of the sleeves on this one, just for a change and I really like the way it looks!

I told her a few weeks ago that she wasn't allowed to turn 3. She looked at me very seriously and said, "OK mommy. I won't turn 3". A week or so later one of my friends asked her how old she would be on her birthday and straight faced replied, "I'm not allowed to turn 3."

So excuse me while I mourn the loss of my newborn and celebrate her spunky 3 year old self!

recent happenings

Hi friends! I know I've been quite absent lately!  When I last blogged about my scrappy trip along, I was all motivated to start blogging again more regularly!  And then, well, then we started looking to buy a house!  And then, WE BOUGHT ONE!  Well, we bought some land and ordered a house!

Ground will be broken in a few weeks, and hopefully it will be ready to move in this summer when Mrlouwho starts his new job. I'm really excited about the house and maybe staying put for a while.  Plus I'm getting a pretty sweet sewing room!

*****
I have been doing quite a bit of sewing lately.  I've decided to try and make a lot of summer clothes for the girls to avoid spending too much this summer.  So far they love what I've made and now I just need to get to work making some more!
I'll share more about these projects soon.

*****
Did you know that it's National Serger Month? I didn't even know such a thing existed!  If you know me, you know that having a serger makes me enjoy sewing garments SO much more!! I was so excited when I was asked again to participate in a blog tour with Nancy Zieman!  I'm so flattered to be among those participating!  I will be posting on Monday as part of her Sew Knits with Confidence tour! I'll be sharing a project I made from her patterns as well as reviewing her new book by the same name.

Of course, there will also be a fun giveaway!! So stay tuned!  I'll be back... (say it in your best Ahhh-nold voice.)

pop up sew & tell v1.1: i have actually been sewing

I've decided I'm going to sew & tell in a pop quiz sort of way!  If I blog on a Friday, I'll put up a linky so you can share some of your finishes too!

I actually have gotten a lot of projects completed in the last several months.  For some reason or another I just haven't been motivated to blog about them.  In all honesty, Instagram has replaced blogging for me quite a bit.  It's so easy and fast to snap a picture of a WIP, get a quick opinion on fabric choices, or just a quick sew and tell share!

I do like the format of blogging and the friendships I have here.  I'm going to make a more concerted effort to get blog posts up.  They might be short, but hopefully they'll be interesting!

I wanted to share a dress I made for sisterlouwho.  I finished it back in November, but it's been a little busy around here the last few months!
Dress Front

I bought this fabric (A 3 Sisters print by Moda) over 4 years ago mostly because it was on sale.  It's pretty - I love a classic Jacobean Paisley floral, but it's not really my normal color palette.  I had initially intended it for a bag - but then it just sat unused in my closet.  I had the inspiration to use it for a dress a couple of months ago!

I've used a similar pattern to make her some dresses when she was more toddler sized, and was happy to find a girl's sized pattern that was similar.  But of course I had to tweak it.  Partly because I didn't have the right amounts of fabric and partly because I like to complicate things all the time. :)
Dress Back

I lengthened the middle panel to make the bottom more of a ruffle and less of a skirt.  If that makes any sense at all.  I also lengthened the sleeves and used elastic thread for the shirring instead of a casing and elastic.  I like how it creates a little ruffle.
detail top
Of course it has to pass the twirl-a-bility test.  I think it did!
twirl factor testing
I'm really happy with it and so is she!  I will be making more of these soon.  So easy and fast!

Have you been sewing anything fun lately?  I would love to see!

sew & tell: July summer edition

Hi friends!

I hope you all are enjoying your summer and being more productive than I am! I'm actually enjoying the break from feeling like I have to post something every week. It's been difficult to get a lot of sewing finished.  We've been trying to enjoy living on vacation and taking advantage of what will most likely be our last summer living so close to the beach.  *sigh*

So a couple of weeks ago, I had to go to Hancock's to find the new Heather Ross Crafty Chloe fabrics.  They are so cute! (I may or may not have gone back to buy more yardage later).  Because I had all of my kids in tow, I figured I'd placate them by letting them pick out some fabric for me to make them each some zippy pouches.

The nice lady at the cutting counter talked me into making pajama pants for all of them too.  So my $1.50 purchase turned into 3 more yards!  It's okay, because when my kids know I'm going to make something for them it usually gets finished pretty quickly.  Otherwise I might actually get pestered to death! ;0)

So that night and the next morning I whipped up three little zippy pouches.  I use the tutorial at Skip To My Lou. They are actually pretty cute!  Brotherlouwho carries his lego guys in his, Sisterlouwho keeps colored pencils and other supplies in hers, and Babylouwho keeps her "friends" (FP Little People) close at hand with hers.
20120727_0463

I was itching to makes some PJ pants, but couldn't find the pattern I had planned on using.  So I went back to the store and bought one.  It's actually a girl's pattern, but it had pants and frankly, elastic waisted PJ pants pretty much work for both.  Plus I like the idea of making some darling flannel nightgowns (Anna Maria Horner Good Folks flannel anyone?)
20120727_0471

I will say, this pattern is awesome for little ones because there is only one pattern piece per leg - so you don't have a side seam. They were a little baggy, so I took and inch or so out of the width of sisterlouwho's after I made the first pair.

So here's what we got:

brotherlouwho took this picture!

so happy!

we all love Hello Kitty!  I think they need some ric rac around the hem.

The sisterslouwho look pretty cute playing around in their matching bottoms!

So have you been able to sew this summer?  I'd love to see it!  Kim from My Go-Go Life came down to visit this weekend.  Maybe I'll some sewing to show for it.  Until then I think we'll go to the beach!

sew & tell v3.31 - summer clothing love

Happy Friday friends! And welcome to Sew & Tell!

My friend and 'sewing student' Jessica came over a couple of times in the last few weeks so she could finish up her skirts before she moves.  She finished the one she has on the first time she came over and got the one she's holding up almost finished on her last visit!  I posted about these skirts last spring - it's an adaptation that pattern.
I have the same fabric that she's holding up and I want to go buy the green Bali Gates (from Amy Butler's LOVE collection) to make one like that too.  I just love these skirts.  Way better than shorts in the hot and humid summers we have here.

While she was making her skirt, I had a project I needed to work on involving pillow case dresses, which I have never actually made.  So before I screwed up the ones I was making for my friend, I tried one out with some Sandi Henderson Secret Garden fabric.
I ended up using this tutorial, with several modifications.  I'll try and blog about it!

I love the way it turned out!  This fabric is perfect for it! I think sisterlouwho likes it too.
The only problem was that babylouwho thought it was for her.  So I put it on her to appease her.

So it's a maxi-dress, no big deal. She was more than happy to keep it on.

I'm itching to make more summer clothes for all of us! Stay tuned.

If you haven't entered my giveaway for an awesome new quilt book, Geared for Guys by Emily Herrick of Crazy Old Ladies Quilts, scroll down to this post and leave a comment!

Linky issue with sew & tell + an epiphany

So the linky service uses a service and that service's server crashed.  Did you follow that? It's okay, me neither!  So that's why the linky wasn't working for a good part of the day yesterday.  It is now fixed and I've reopened the linky so you can post through Sunday late night!

*****
In other news...

I've found that if you finish up your half finished projects, your sewing space magically starts to get decluttered.

For instance today I pulled out a hooded towel that I've been meaning to make for a year.  It took 20 minutes.  Why do I put things off??
I finally stitched down these appliques on these onsies that I've had in my to-do pile for TWO years.  Another 20 minutes.  I have got to work on that.  It really does help that my machine has a designated spot and it doesn't move any more.  I just sit down and turn it on!! Love my new table.

And just for fun, I think she likes her new towel.

sew & tell 3.24 - a lunchbox placemat

**The Linky is NOW working!  I've opened it up through late late Sunday night.  :) **

Hi friends!  Are you working on your spring cleaning projects?  I don't want you to be overwhelmed thinking you need an overhaul of your sewing space. Or a complete remodel.

The more I'm working on mine, I'm realizing it's more a matter of putting things away, purging (even big things like desks) and find a system of organizing that works. And making most of the space I have.  Notice I keep saying space, not studio or room. I know most of us sew at our kitchen tables or share our space with a home office!

So set a goal, take a before picture, and keep working.  I'm planning a better all inclusive post soon.  But the sew & tell link up and prizes won't be up until after the 2nd week in April.  So you have a few weeks to work on it!

*****

I had a fun sewing date yesterday with my local friends.  I was able to cut and prep some bindings and some placemats for my kids.  Sisterlouwho had a great idea and asked me to make a smaller placemat for her lunch box! And this makes her excited to take her lunch! bonus!  I had her pick out some fabric from my scraps and I whipped this up last night in about 20 minutes.

lunchbox placemat
I'm not going to lie.  I think it's adorable and want to make my own! I can see why mug rugs are all the rage!

That's Sandi Henderson's Ginger Blossom fabric.  She picked out some flannel for the back (that didn't photograph well) and I used some strips of scrap cotton batting inside.  I just sprayed strips of batting leftover from trimming quilts and then trimmed it down where it overlapped so it wouldn't be bumpy.

I finished it off with a serged edge (like my dish drying mats) for a quick finish.  Maybe when my mom comes (yes, she's coming for a month to keep me company! woo hoo! Sew fest 2012!) I'll have her help me learn how to use bias tape, because I know it would look a little more finished.

lunch box placemat
Here it is folded up in her lunch box!  Mrlouwho joked that people were going to make fun of her.  I said they'll all be jealous! :)

This finished up at just about 11x14.  Totally portable.

What have you been up to this week?

a sewing table find (and the one in which I utilize a LOT of parentheses)

I'm too embarrassed at the moment to show you the state of my sewing space.  It's currently (and mostly always) a disaster.   We have this awesome sunroom in this house and I slowly took it over when we moved in putting in my treadmill (it's like running outside, right?), my oversized-open-shelved-eyesore of a computer desk (that turned into a makeshift sewing table), and my little blue table (that I typically use my serger on but really love to have it clear for taking photos).

The computer desk is my biggest nemesis (it's sort of like this one).  The lovely display at IKEA with matching boxes and crates and doodads for keeping that open shelving looking pretty is lost on my messy mind.  It needs to go. I bought a much smaller desk, made for just a computer (which is all I need) and moved my computer to the living room (which is considerably warmer in the winter).

Over Christmas break I spent a lot of time organizing my big cabinets that hold a lot of my sewing supplies.  Things that I haven't figured out where to put yet got shoved in the sunroom.  My dining room table is always cluttered with my machine and cutting supplies - which makes eating together as a family in the dining room difficult at best.

So I decided I needed an old fashioned sewing machine table.  Something small that I could move around the house if I wanted to sew somewhere else.  Something that I could put the machine flush with the table for easier movement of fabric while quilting.  Something that was small enough that it couldn't collect clutter, because the only thing that will fit on it IS THE MACHINE.

I was checking out our local yard sale web site and found an ad for a Danish Modern Pecan sewing table.  I emailed.  They replied. I called. I picked it up this morning.
It is in nice condition and I don't even plan on painting it (shocking I know!!)  I didn't even take my machine to see if it would fit.  I figured between me and my aspiring woodworker (aka mrlouwho) we could make it work.

When you flip open the top to extend the table, you see the little hinged parts which hold the machine it was built for (or at least one of the hinged flaps, the back one was gone).  And there isn't a shelf or anything underneath.  But, BUT! The opening is big enough for my machine!

My secret plan is to have aforementioned woodworker (or the guys at Home Depot) cut me a piece of plywood (or something) and attach a shelf with some L-brackets to the underside where my machine will sit.  Good plan, no?

Until then, with the extension flap folded up it fits my machine and acrylic table on the top perfectly.

And brotherlouwho and I tried it out today and made some more progress on his quilt.  Here's what we've gotten so far.  It's shaping up quite nicely!

Where do you use your sewing machine? Inquiring minds want to know!!

sew & tell v3.20: the beginnings of a quilt

So I was feeling the itch to work on brotherlouwho's quilt recently. I feel like there's always sewing to do for my family and then other stuff gets in the way.  So when I asked him if he wanted to help me, he was all sorts of enthusiastic!

I was gifted these lovely Heather Ross fabrics and some Katie Jump Rope by sweet Kim from My Go-Go Life over a year ago, and they've been begging me to play with them.  So during babylouwho's nap the other day I had him help me fussy cut some more 5.5 inch squares for the blocks.

I let him sit on my lap and help me sew the blocks together.  My seams may or may not be that straight.  But it's okay, he was having a ball!
When he saw the first block completed he said, "Mom! It looks like a picture frame around the fishies!"  Loved it! He's caught the vision.
And now I've found a cure for my procrastination, just ask for his help with my projects.  He asks everyday now if we can work some more on his quilt.  And we've gotten several more blocks finished!

Yesterday when we were sitting at the machine together he said to me, "Mom you're a good artist at sewing."  Are you kidding me?  I'll keep him, tantrums and all.

I'm working on this quilt in an improv sort of way.  I have a lot of the middle squares cut and I'm cutting the sashing strips as we go.  I have no idea how big this quilt will end up being or how many squares I need.  It's fun to let him help me pick everything out as we go. It's also nice to not spend hours cutting a bunch of fabric out.

These blocks start with a 5.5" square and 2.5" strips (2 strips at 5.5" sewn to the top and bottom.  2 strips at 9.5" sewn on each side).  A classic square in square design.  My plan is to sort of alternate orange and blue the whole way through.  I like the direction we're going so far.  And when he just saw these pictures up here, he said, "Hey mom, can we work on this some more today?"

flashback, retro, vintage... whatever you want to call it

My mom made me this dress when I was about the same age as my oldest is now.
me in a dress my mom made me.
I didn't know she had held onto it but it found it's way to my house a year or so ago.

My oldest found it in the closet and wants to wear it every day!
same dress 30 something years later.

It's true, we might look a little bit alike. I really think it's that dress that inspired me to make this one for her earlier this year.

Nice dress from Nicey Jane
Although in true amylouwho fashion, the one I made has an elastic neck and no zippers or bias tape finishing.  The one my mom made? Zippers, trim, bias finished edge, ruffle, you get the idea.

And I really ought to get a picture of her in the new one before she outgrows it, no?

sew & tell - April 2011 - sewing groups

Hello! I feel like it's been forever since a sew & tell post, but it's only been a month.  It's been a busy month over here.  Time really does fly when, well. . .sometimes we are having fun.  Other times it's just a lot of running around and trying to keep up with everything!

I've met a lot of lovely friends since my move and have found that many of them:
  1. love to sew, and know what they are doing.
  2. have sewn a little bit and want to sew more.
  3. have a machine and want to learn but have no idea where to start.
I have taken it on as my personal mission to light the sewing fire under anyone who is ready and willing.  My plan for world domination starts with changing the world one new sewist at a time!

Most of my friends have young children that make it difficult to have uninterrupted sewing time and most of us have little girls.  So we hatched a plan.

A sewing night free of children where we make darling skirts for our girls!!  Remember these skirts that I made for mine last winter?  We planned a Saturday night to get together so I could show them how to make them. And it was so much fun to sit around and snack and chat and cut and sew!  I even got to take a trip to our LQS earlier in the day and found some darling Lila Tueller fabric.

Which I whipped into this little skirt.
summer skirts

I can't really stand how cute this fabric is!

This was the perfect skirt to work on that night because I was able to demonstrate how to make and sew gathers and finish it (except the hem and elastic) while I helped everyone else.

So that's my finish. I almost have a tiny one finished for babylouwho too!

But on to the good part of the story.  My friend Teri is an example of a the #1 sewer, she pretty much knew what she was doing and didn't need a lot of help.  Her first skirt was almost finished when we left.
Teri's first skirt

I was surprised the next day at church to see her daughter wearing it! I loved that she stayed up to finish it!

I was at her house this week and she showed me what she has done in the few weeks since we had our little soiree.  THREE more adorable skirts!
and her next 3!

She even added her own twist by sewing a tier on with that cute little ruffle at the TOP of the tier!  And doing a contrasting hem on the other!

IMG_2635
Awesome!!  Her next project is a quilt from Amy's Modern Basics - she is just waiting on one more piece of fabric.  I can't wait to show you what she is going to do!!

Next up is Shayna.  She's more a #2.  She's sewn a bit but wants to sew more.  She has four darling children.  Her last two are barely 14 months apart.  She suffers from can't-leave-the-house-because-someone-is-always-taking-a-nap syndrome.  She was starting to get a little stir-crazy and wanted to do something besides clean.  She also needed a new diaper bag.

So she came shopping in my stash and I helped her make an amylouwho signature bag.  We spent a few days working on it together.  I would go over and help her with a section and leave some instructions.  She would call me as soon as she was ready and ask what was next!  I loved how eager she was and how driven she was to finish.  And I have to say, I'm quite smitten with it.  I almost wish it were mine....
Shayna's awesome bag

I love the Midwest Modern exterior with the LOVE sunspots on the inside.  And the key hook!  Everyone's favorite part!
Shayna's bag - interior

and don't you love her belt? And the way her hands are free but has everything she needs within arms reach?
bag in action!

She came to our sewing night too - I mean, she was on fire!! She sewed up this little skirt for her little cutie!
Chloe's skirt

and THEN, the next week she made a little matching bag, the amylouwho mini-sig.
amylouwho mini-sig

and for cuteness sake, I had to show the whole ensemble!
chloe's ensemble

I love how excited Shayna is to keep sewing.  She keeps sending me links of the next project she wants to sew!

She has the advantage of not being a fabric-hoarder.  She picks a project and then buys the fabric.  Me on the other hand... I find fabric and dream of all the possibilities while my stash multiplies in the dark.

One of the other ladies who came picked out some awesome frog fabric with bright colors that fits her daughter's personality to a T. She's a number 3.  She has a machine, but it had been stored in the garage for quite sometime and she was finding all sorts of debris (read: dead bugs) in her machine.  We had some good laughs over that!  I've got to get back together with her so we can finish hers up.

I love how sewing has brought something enriching to each of our lives.  It's time we can spend doing something we enjoy and bless others at the same time.  We as women really have a need within to create.
"The desire to create is one of the deepest yearnings of the human soul."
~ Dieter F. Uchtodorf
I just love this video that talks about just that. (It's only 2 minutes ~ And he has a really great accent!)

Remember a while back when I had a giveaway and as an entry you had to tell me about a favorite experience or favorite thing about teaching someone else to sew (go read your responses - they were awesome!)? Or when I asked you to share your favorite sewing memory (responses here)?

I remember being touched by the lovely senitments expressed.  Grandmothers, mothers, daughters, sisters, friends, all forming relationships over sewing.  Dresses, pillows, doll clothes, quilts, baby bedding, anything!  This desire to create not only is fulfilling on a personal level but also in those relationships we form while doing so.  I just love it!!!!

I've wanted to issue this challenge for a while now, but didn't know how to present it until I started thinking about sew & tell this month.  For the next two months (at least) I want you to find someone who needs some encouragement sewing.

I'm surprised how many people I have talked to who have a brand new sewing machine that hasn't been taken out of the box in (fill in the blank) years.

They are out there, closet sewers in hiding!  Find them! Inspire them!  Sew with them!  AND THEN. Come back here for sew & tell and link up your blog post sharing your experience!

I promise it will be fun and rewarding and you will be happier for doing it!

But for today, what have you finished in the last month?
