Modern Basics book review and giveaway

Welcome to the end of the line of Amy's blog book tour!
Amy and I go waaaaay back! Well I like to think we do. I remember "meeting" her because I think we were both fairly new to the crafty-blogging scene and she was one of the first blogging friends I made. And a few months later when I visited Utah, I emailed her to see if she wanted to meet up and hang out. I remember her telling me her husband was worried I was some crazy person who may or may not be trusted. Little did he (or we) know the online sewing community is full of such niceness! And that more than 2 years later we would still be good friends!  It has also been fun to quilt with her in an online quilting bee.  And I can't talk about Amy here without acknowledging her part in inspiring Sew & Tell!

If you haven't heard yet, Amy has written a book!

I was so excited to see the book in person.  It is chock full of simple sophisticated quilt designs that even the earliest beginner could tackle.  The first page of each pattern has a photo of the quilt laying flat, supply lists, clear cutting instructions and suggestions for different sizes.

I love this window pane effect!

I've always loved a postage stamp quilt and this variation doesn't dissapoint.

This is the first project I have earmarked to make from the book!

I asked Amy a few questions so we could all get to know her a little better.
How and when did you learn to sew?
I learned to sew from my mom and 4-H.  Mom is left handed, and didn't want to teach me backward.  I was 10 when I started, and haven't stopped except for a few years in college.
What is your favorite thing about quilting?
I really love all of it, but my favorite is finishing the binding.  My husband has watched me lay a corner out, and see the first finished corner. Watching it be finished, is magic!

What is your favorite non-quilt thing to sew?
Bags!  I like to think up my own shapes/patterns and sew a new bag for each season.

What or who inspired you to start this book writing project?
As I started sewing more and more quilts, I was looking for simple and interesting patterns that could be finished easily in a week or two, instead of a month or year.  I wasn't finding them, and started sketching my ideas, which eventually turned into a book proposal.

Is there any sewing project or skill that intimidates you?
I'm not an expert at applique, but I don't let it intimidate me!  I keep trying it in small doses to gain the experience.

What is your biggest hurdle in completing projects?
Like any of you...TIME!  There's always a project, or two, on my brain waiting for the time.

What is your biggest asset in completing projects?
I'm very systematic in my approach, this helps keep me organized, and makes it easy for me to pick up where I left off.

Are you indeed, superwoman? ;)
Hahaha, no.  I wish.

Fruit or Chocolate?
Chocolate - for sure!
Naps or sewing?
I wish my kids still napped!  I rarely nap, and much prefer to sew with my free time.

Thanks so much Amy for letting me a part of your tour! You can check out the rest of the blog tour posts here - there may still be giveaways open to enter! And if you are too impatient to find out if you win a copy, you can always purchase a copy here.

Amy has offered up a copy of her book to one of you!
To enter:  Leave me a comment telling me how long you have been sewing and if you have ever finished a quilt.
Giveaway ends Tuesday March 8, winner announced on Wednesday! Make sure you leave an email in your comment if you are a no-reply blogger.  Winner will be drawn by random.org.
I love finding things out about you guys!  Good Luck!

I just started sewing in January. It was one of my New Year's resolutions, and now I can't stop!! I've finished a few quilted table runners, they're the perfect size to practice piecing and quilting. I'm cutting and piecing blocks for a couple full size quilts now...hopefully I'll finish them sometime this year. ;)

I've been sewing since I was in the 4th grade when I took lessons at the Rag Shop! It was just me and 4 other "seasoned" ladies. But I LOVED it! I didn't start quilting til 4 years ago when I moved away to go to college and I haven't stopped since. I have completed 3 quilts and countless little projects. I mostly make gifts to give away to friends and family members. But I love it!

Love the book!! I've been sewing about 40 years ...ouch! that makes me kinda old ... I started making quilts about 10 years ago & I have made many. Most are complete but I do have quite a few left to finish :) Thanks for the chance to win!

I have been sewing about 42 years, ever since I was a young girl. My first quilts, about 30 years ago were mostly quilted by hand, and took me 3 years to finish. I have since resorted to machine quilting, either by myself or off to a long arm quilter if the quilt is very large or I want a specific pattern on it.I don't trust myself enough with free motion quilting sometimes. This book looks like it has fabulous patterns that I would like to try.

I've been sewing since 7th Grade (Home Ec). That was 49 years ago! I have finished several quilts - some baby gifts - and ONE wall hanging quilt! Some I've made in collaboration with my daughter - a truly modern quilter who is teaching this out-dated seamstress a few things!

I "officially" started sewing about a year ago when my husband went to china for three weeks and I needed something to occupy myself. Since then I have FINISHED 6 quilts!

I learned to sew back when I was younger but then didn't do any sewing for about 10 years. Since I picked it up again, it's been about 2 years. I haven't finished a quilt yet, cause I'm just cutting out my first one - a coin quilt. Then I'm going to attempt quilts for my twin boys beds. Thanks for a chance to win a copy of Amy's new quilt book - it looks awesome! :)

I learned how to sew in high school, home economics class, sewed nightgowns, pj's and dresses for my daughters when they were small and didn't complain about my lousy skills. I took an adult ed class in quilting (hand sewing mostly) and then about 5 years later, approx 10 years ago really got serious again!! I'm so glad I did :)k.bugbee@att.net

This looks like a great book! I've been sewing since I was tiny (maybe six or seven?), but didn't take it too seriously until a few years ago. I've only finished small quilts, but just started on my first real bed-sized quilt! Thanks for the giveaway--I'd love to win this one!

I've been sewing since I was about 5, so.. 32 years now. Ugh, does that mean it's taken me 32 years to finish 4 quilts?

I started sewing when I was a little kid. My mom has always been a super productive sewist and crafter. As an adult, I didn't sew for many years, but took it up again seriously after having a baby 3 years ago. I have finished 3 quilts so far and I'm antsy to start another one.

Thanks for this great giveaway! I can't wait to check this book out.

I started sewing just under a year ago. So far I've sewn lots of dresses for my daughter and I'm getting on with a hexagon quilt for her as well - just about to start sewing all the hexagons together. I've also just planned and cut out fabric for my first two quilts. Looking forward to getting started! Thanks for the giveaway.

I started sewing when my granddaughter was born in July 2005. I'm not very good at quilting, and it's been a struggle. I can't say I even have a "favorite" part other than the fact that I can finally say, "Thank God I finished that!" But my birthday is in May, so I was born under Taurus the Bull, and I truly am bullheaded. And yes, I have finished a quilt. In fact, I've finished three of them. My favorite? A t-shirt quilt. I'd loev to win this book - maybe something in it will inspire me to make yet another quilt. And maybe I could fall in love with quilting. dmj53(at)hotmail(dot)com

I have been sewing on and off for the last 13 years, but seriously for the last 3. I have finished 3 or 4 baby quilts, but have not finished a bigger quilt yet. I have one in process of being quilted, and two that need to be sandwiched. Somehow the big ones intimidate me. I seem to like piecing better than quilting.

I have been piecing quilts for about 7 years. I haven't gotten brave enough to try quilting them. I have finished quite a few small quilts for Linus.

I have been sewing since 6 years old (handsewing at first, taught by my mom). One of my earliest projects was 2 tiny handsewn quilts, for each one of my Barbie's beds...they were orange and burgundy (and quite ugly compared to my taste today) but I was very proud just the same. Today I fit my hobby into my busy family life with 2 toddlers!

Hi Amy,
I'd love the chance to win this book. I've been sewing for ever (about 45 years, I started at age 7!) and yes, I have successfully finished quite a few quilts. Still have more to finish as well as start, so this book would be handy.
