Well, straight lines are harder than they look. Luckily, my mom sent me the plexiglass table the fits my machine arm so I should have better maneuvering of the quilt now. I think I might have to take some of these out, but that's okay.

I also sewed my strips together for the baby's quilt. And I thought I was being clever with my strips. Do you see my fatal error?
Oooooops. When I layed them out like this, I realized that meant I would have stripes of polka dots running down my quilt. Not exactly the scrappy unplanned image I had in mind.
Then I realized I could just take a strip off one end and sew it to the other side. This moved the dots from the middle to an end. Does that make sense? I did this for half of my strip sets. Crisis averted.
Then when I layed it out to get an idea how it's going to look, I saw this:
Much better. Don't you think?

I discovered last year about spray basting, and I agree...how did I ever use safety pins?!!
Isn't spray basting great! I only found out about it a few weeks ago and I agree - how did we live without it?!

I was on th floor pinning/gathering a queen-sized bed skirt the week before my #4 was born. Hefting that bowling bowl around under me was part of the workout.

I've made those mistakes laying out blocks too! Looks like you solved it perfectly. You're quilting looks great on that first quilt! Just keep going and You'll be a pro in no time!

Amy, I really love your bird quilt! The straight line quilting is perfect for this. I can't imagine you basting this eight months pregnant. I have a hard time crawling around on the floor to smooth out a quilt not pregnant. The LOVE baby quilt looks great.

Tip for spray basting. I saw this on another web site. She fixed a wall in her sewing studie (or garagae or fence outside if it is a pretty day) added ceiling tiles and then newspapers taped around the outside of the tiles to catch the overspray. Pinned the backing to the ceiling tile wall, sprayed, lay the batting on top, sprayed and then the top of the quilt! I bought foam insulation panels at our local hardware store, mounted them on a wall in my sewing room and am using that to spray baste my quilts! Love it! No crawling around on the floor!

Your baby quilt is gorgeous love all the beautiful fabrics. And I'm in awe of you crawling around on the floor while 8 months pregnate. I think it would have killed me. The quilting looks great. You are a trooper.
That's the way to avert the crisis, get out the scissors! It looks great, love the dots all over! Good luck on the other quilting-it-yourself project, looks like your spray is holding well!
Have you seen the fusibe batting by Hobbs? I used to spray baste everything and it was great not to have to pin anymore. But, that smell! The fusible batting is great!
I think it's super appropriate that you used those Amy Butler prints for your baby quilt because I "LOVE" it. :)
Your bird quilt is looking fabulous! I would love to try spray basting but I don't have a large well ventilated craft space to do that... all your projects look fabulous! You choose the prettiest fabrics!
