I told you last week that my friend Allyn was coming up to sew with me. We had SO much fun. I just wish it would have been a little longer. I owe my rebirth into the sewing world to her. It was on her machine in California that I pieced together this quilt. She also made me my first diaper bag. And is generally just amazing and inspiring (and really really funny!).
I've felt bad that I've never really made her anything - especially a bag! So when I saw this fabric I ordered it with her in mind. When she got here on Thursday she saw it and was secretly (or not so secretly) coveting it.
I asked her if she liked it, to which she responded with a resounding YES!! So I caved and told her my project while she was here was to make her a bag to take home with her. I was going to torment her the whole time and tell her it was a custom order for someone else....
I'm quite smitten with it myself. If you haven't seen this fabric in person - it's amazing! I'm warning you though - you need a big project to handle the scale of this print. Those poppies are over 12" across.
I originally ordered the dogwood to go inside, but it was too big and pretty for a lining. So I ordered enough stripe to line this one and a smaller version, made with the dogwoods. Maybe I'll get that done next week.

As I mentioned earlier this week, you all have been so amazing and supportive in wanting to continue on through the summer with Sew & Tell that we are going to keep it going. The posts will still be found here but I have several volunteers who will share what they are doing so that all I have to do is hit "Publish". Thank you everyone!!!
Can't wait to see what you've been doing - your turn!

Gosh, I love that fabric line but had no idea the poppies were so big! The bag is a perfect project to feature them! I'm sure your friend was ecstatic!
Amy, these poppies are fabulous!!! Love the lining in the bag as well. I'm sure Allyn is thrilled. Can't wait to see the dogwood version. So glad Sew and Tell Friday will continue. It's what keeps me going ;-)
love the poppies! and the lining coordinates great...my favorite part: the little polka dot ribbon key holder i see peeking in the last pictures! i love dots.
What a happy bag to find a home with such a good friend! LOL I can't keep secrets or tease for long either!
Beautiful!
Your bag is beautiful. Glad you were able to have some fun sewing time with Allyn. With all you have going on you needed this wonderful break.
wow...lovely bag...gorgeous fabric
your bag is great!
What a lovely bag! I love to sew for my friends too . . . in fact my sewing this week was all about friends and family! Have a great weekend!
What a dear friend you are to make and give this sweet bag! It is a bag that has a happy feeling like spring and summer!
I saw this line at some shop and I just never really loved it, but you make it look SOOO pretty! Love it! (Also, I checked out your 20 years in the making baby quilt link. So cute, it totally looks like something I would have pulled out of a trunk at my grandma's house. Those little repro prints are PERFECT with your embroidered blocks. I just think it's so cute!)
Great finish. Isn't it fun to to tease good friends. Dee comes over next week. Got to see what I can think up!!
Blessings,
KT
I'm so glad Allyn got that lovely bag. She deserves it! Thanks for being a proxy sister. :)
(One of the links on this post gave me the idea to give away the pinwheel quilt. Perfect! I wanted the colors to pop and look happy, they don't. The dots look like traffic lights to me and out of place. I should have used more colors... On and on. :))
Oh, that fabric takes my breath away! What a beautiful bag! I need to order some right away! Sooooo glad that Sew and Tell will continue! I look forward to it every week!
Wow! The poppies are wonderful for that bag! They're huge:) Glad Allyn liked it:)
Fantastic bag Amy! I too love surprising folks, but also like to know that they're gonna like what i make, so I usually get them involved!
GREAT springy bag. I'm still schlepping my autumn bag ... really need to update THAT.
I was on Hawthorne threads the other day getting fabrics for a baby quilt and that was going to be my impulse buy. It is gorgeous! So is your bag! Next time that one is in stock I'll have to buy it!
I am glad you have a few volunteers to make things happen for you! Yeah!
Very cute bags. I am new to your blog and linked up for the first time. So fun! Thanks for all the cute ideas and beautiful fabrics that you share.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MEEEE! it truly was a Christmas miracle to receive this beautiful piece. i had a great time with you amy and am going to watch north and south one more time before i return it. i can't get enough. i don't know what it is.
I have so many big prints that I am afraid to use, mostly because things I make are usually small. I need to take hints from you Amy and make something big with my big prints :)
Gosh I just love that fabric line.
You must have a bag for every day of the week. They are always so pretty and I'm envious.
Great finish!
For some reason, I could not get your blog to come up yesterday! So I will have to save DD's sewing project for next week. Great bag too!
that was so sweet of you Amy to not torment Allyn the whole weekend. Her bag turned out cool!
Gorgeous bag, Amy; I adore the fabric!
I'm so excited for deisha to make me one of these bags! and weird claim to fame for me - my friend in medschool was laura gunn and when i saw this bag, i was like 'i think this is laura's stuff' and i was right. awesome choice of fabric. you make amazing things.
That is gorgeous! Do you know if the Turqoise Textured Stripe compliments the Poppy in aqua? My fabric store didn't have any of the textured stripe and it is hard to tell from the computer.
