design advice - i need help

Remember this quilt top?:

I really want to finish it.  Originally I had thought I would put another border on it.  At first I was thinking this, with the red dot binding:

But I don't think I have enough of the fabric to make a wide enough border. And I don't think I want another really wide border (should I cut the white border down?)

But I do have enough of this:

But I'm not sure I want the brown in the border (it makes it so dark).

So now I'm wondering if I should forget the dark border and just bind it with one of the greens. Or maybe still the red.

I'm leaning towards the wallflower in green and just bind it, no dark border....
sheesh - do I sound a little indecisive?  I just want to make a decision so I can finish it!!

Any opinions? I really appreciate it!!

I'm picturing the red dot as a narrow border and then the green as binding.

I agree, I love the red dot, but I would not introduce the brown in the border. I like the idea of the green binding. Don't you hate having to make decisions like this. I always drag my husband in, he is a photographer and has a great eye for color.

I would not do an additional border, and bind it in the green. It's a really great quilt!

I agree -- green binding is all I think you need. :) Love the quilt!

I would leave it as is, no additional borders and the green binding. What ever you decide I'm sure it will look lovely.

i love the no border green binding option

How about you do the brown green border - but as you're seing it on put a wee fillet of the red in there - I don't think that's the right work, not enuff caffeine, but the thing where you cut a 1" or 3/4" strip, fold it in half and insert it in the seam between the white and the brown/green. When you press the brown over you'll have a teeny silver of color!

Ooh - took another look - maybe the green wallflower and the red fillet instead of the brown/green - and then bind with the brown green

I also like the idea of just binding it with the green. You could also try a scrapy binding with the red dot and green together. It looks really nice and crisp without a border.

I vote for no additional borders and the binding in green. But, then, I'm not into borders at all, really!

Cut the white border down and trim in either just the green or the green with the red dots. Don't use the brown! Luv you!

This is such a fun quilt I can see why you want to finish it. I agree with the others that just want a green binding.

LOVE it! Its stunning! I do like the option of just using the amy butler flowers as the binding. Another idea, cut down the white, add a thin border of red (like 2 inches) more white and then the binding with the Amy Butler flowers. But, knowing you, what ever you decide will be amazing!

I like what candied fabrics was suggesting with the fillet of colour idea...almost like how I've seen some quilters use ric rac by the binding...

I think what Candied Fabrics said in comment 8 or what Aunt Spicy said in comment 13 would look good. It will be stunning however you finish it!

I think the red dots will bring out the red in the quilt, by the way that quilt is soooo pretty, love the greens!

I think it depends on what colors you want to pop out. If you put a small border of the red around the quilt all the red accents in it will pop. If you use just the green then it will be just the greens that are predominant! I like the idea of having the reds kinda stick out....they are such beautiful accents to your quilt!

I agree with Barb, add the red, to really bring out the red in the quilt.

oh definitely put the red full moon in there somewhere Amy! you know how I feel about polka dots. plus I think the red will make it really cheery!

I would use the pink from the bird (top row, middle block). That would bring out the pinks and tone down the green.

After that perhaps a slim border in green then the red binding.

I think the top is gorgeous as it is and the red dotted fabric for a binding.

I would do a narrow red dot border followed by a larger one with the green/brown. I love borders!

Kristen said...

I vote for leave it as it is and use the green print as the border.

I'd leave it as is .... then bind with the RED!!
It would really bring out all the bits of red throughtout the quilt.

I would probably leave it like it is and bind it in the red.

But, if you want it bigger I would probably just add more white.

I'm excited to see this again! :) Do you really want it larger, or just to get it finished?

I would just finish it with wallflower binding, but if you want it bigger . . . I love the flange/piping idea and the green/brown for wider border.

It is and will be beautiful, however you finish it!!

I really like it the way it is. I say just quilt and bind it:)

I think you need to either bind it or border it with a little bit of red. My true vote would be to just bind it with the red - no more borders.

No border - leave as is - and bind with the red...That's what I would do...

I VOTE FOR THE RED.

I like Candy's piping idea, but I'm neutral on borders. I'm sure it will look great, whatever you decide!

I'm seeing red binding...No green...

I havent read the other comments so maybe this has already been said. Here is my 2 cents.
I wouldnt use the brown border. I think the red dot binding would look best against the white border you have.
Can wait to see it done.

I'm with Sara, just use the red & white for the binding, no border. I think it will just "pop" the quilt.

How do you feel about a scrappy border? By that I mean long sections of the green, with enough other greens to finish each side. Mix it up, in big chunks. Then the red for the binding. I think the scrappiness would go well with all blocks, and then the punch of the red to bring it all together!

Sandra said...

I would not put on an other border just a binding with the red doted fabric I agree that this would give it a great contrast and "that" special something.

Opinion #36 ... trim the white border down a bit and use a the green wallflower - if you don't have enough, use 4 corner stones (maybe scrappy like the squares?) and as much as I LOVE the red - I'm not seeing it as binding.

Nicole said...

I love that you have so many opinions on how to finish this beautiful quilt! Does it make it harder to decide? My two cents - leave the white (no more borders) and bind it in the red dot.

Diane said...

I can't wait to see what you decide. I think it needs a bit more red/pink in either border, piping or binding to pop those birds a bit.

Whatever you do I am sure it will be beautiful, but I really love that wallflower. I think it goes with the red better than the damask. And I think you need some red/pink in the border to make those birdies perk up a little! Very cute, I love all those greens!

LollyChops said...

I like the idea of binding it with the green....

BUT I saw someone else suggest the green with a thin border of the red and I actually really like that too.

Does that help at all or make things worse?!?!?! hehehe
